From Rizal to the Ateneo: The Story of Naomi Ruth Abrian Resurreccion, Scholar and Summa Cum Laude

In a world that often celebrates only the destination, Naomi Ruth Abrian Resurreccion reminds us of the power of beginnings. Her journey from a small town in Rizal to the prestigious halls of Ateneo de Manila University is not merely a story of academic triumph but a testament to resilience, gratitude, and purpose.

Naomi's dreams may have blossomed under the blue skies of Ateneo, but their roots were firmly planted in Juan Sumulong Memorial Junior College (JSMJC), the first institution that recognized her potential with a full scholarship during her senior high school years. “The privilege given to me was something I did not take for granted,” she reflects. “I treated this chapter of my life as a stepping stone to reach my dream of studying at the Ateneo.”

It was at JSMJC where Naomi found more than just an academic foundation. She found belief—in herself, from her family, her teachers, and her classmates. JSMJC is a small institution with a big heart, where everyone is loved, as its tagline always says. And it was there that her determination was forged. So when that life-changing email from the Ateneo arrived, offering her a full scholarship, Naomi knew it was time to take the leap.

Yet, Katipunan wasn’t the smooth road of dreams fulfilled. “Studying at the top university in the Philippines was far from easy,” she admits. There were nights with little to no sleep, bouts of imposter syndrome, and an overwhelming feeling of not being enough in a sea of excellence. “Being a scholar in such a prestigious university wasn’t for the weak,” she says. “It felt like I could lose everything at any given moment.”

But Naomi endured, not by striving to be the smartest, but by learning to lead with the biggest heart.

At the Ateneo, she embraced the spirit of being “a woman for others.” She didn’t confine herself to academics; she reached beyond the classroom to serve communities. She became a deputy in two organizations supporting the university’s scholar community, eventually rising to an officer position in Kythe-Ateneo, where she discovered her calling in service. There, she served children with chronic illnesses through hospital visits and medical play. In her final year, she organized a large-scale benefit concert for the sector, transforming compassion into tangible impact.

Naomi’s academic excellence, culminating in her graduating Summa Cum Laude, wasn’t simply about long hours at a desk. It was about support: her mother who stood by her every step, friends who held her hand during the lowest points, and the sectors who reminded her of the "why" behind her hard work.

“College was truly about loving the field you chose, the people around you, and the service you can give to others,” she says. And it is in this spirit that she offers this milestone, not as a culmination, but as a prayer answered. She dedicates it to her mother, her late father who raised her with strength and kindness, and her younger self, “the girl full of courage and determination,” who dared to dream big from a small town in Rizal.

Now, Naomi Ruth Abrian Resurreccion stands as more than a scholar or a top graduate. She is a beacon of hope for students from humble beginnings, a testament that brilliance is not defined by one’s origin but by one’s purpose. And while her dreams unfolded in the Ateneo, the heartbeat of her story will always echo from her home, JSMJC.

JSMJC beats top schools in research!

The JSMJC Hydrofortera team, which won the Best Research Paper and Best Presenter Awards in the Liksik II 2025: 2nd La Salle Green Hills Senior High School Research Conference, made it to the list of papers reviewed and filtered among submissions from all over the country and was invited to present their paper in the 7th De La Salle University Senior High School Research Congress for its publication to the Animo Repository website of De La Salle University where all outstanding papers presented in their research conferences are accessible.

Animo Repository: https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/conf_shsrescon/2025/

The research on Hydrofortera qualified under the Materials Engineering Paper Presentation category with Adamson University, De La Salle University Manila, and the University of Baguio Science High School.

You may access the Hydrofortera study and other papers here: https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/conf_shsrescon/2025/paper_men/

On June 23, 2025, Libatique et al. visited DLSU Manila and impressed their co-researchers with their study and successfully answered all queries about their paper. Here is the video of their presentation:

Winning in Liksik 2025

The Juan Sumulong Memorial Junior College slayed top schools in the recently concluded Liksik II 2025: 2nd La Salle Green Hills Students' Research Conference with the study, "HydroFortera: An Experimental Study on the Development of an Effective and Cost-Effective Eco-friendly Geopolymer Water-stop Cement," April 10-11, 2025.

The winning research was authored by Aaron Dave M. Libatique, Zsharich Nicole D. Fernandez, Rizha Trixcy V. Ferrer, Amaro B. Lanuza, Jr., Liam Rori S. Crisostomo, Jannelle Mae D.R. Samotia, and Juan Lorenzo C. Villanueva of STEM 201, with the first four student researchers as paper presenters during the event.

Taking over Pilapil Hall at La Salle Green Hills with an on-the-post mixing of their first-ever Geopolymer water-stop cement, topped with an elevator pitch that would make any panel of judges buy their product and the ingenuity of their research, JSMJC SHS student researchers left the research critics in awe as these students present their research and prototype with confidence despite the seemingly Herculean task of winning against top science high schools and universities. They received nothing but commendations for how the paper was written, its immediate impact on the community, and its overall scientific value, and one judge even said that, given the chance, she would like to study in JSMJC herself.

JSMJC won the Best Presenter and Best Research Paper awards.

Second place in the paper presentation and the Best Abstract Poster is San Beda University-Rizal.

Third place in the paper presentation is the Philippine Science High School.

The participating schools that qualified for the conference include:

La Salle Green Hills

De La Salle University - Dasmarinas

De La Salle University - Manila

Colegio de San Juan de Letran

San Beda University - Rizal
